Mircroblogging

What is Microblogging?

Microblogging is a networking service that allows mobile users of cell phones and other Internet connected devices to stay abreast of activities within a group by receiving frequent published updates, typically of 140 characters or less. Text messages are uploaded to a microblogging service such as Twitter, Jaiku and others, then distributed to group members. All parties subscribed in the targeted group are instantly notified of the microblog, enabling groups to keep tabs on one another’s activities in real time. A Microblog can also be public, with arbitrary subscribers joining and dropping microblogs at will.
It’s not only students who can benefit from this modernized, improved version of the telephone tree. Faculty might also find uses for microblogging. For example, when preparing for performances, band and drama teachers could use microblogs to network participating students for improved organizational efficiency. The quick nature of microblogs makes it a good management tool when the success of a project relies on many different people pulling together in a timely fashion.

Types of blog's such as 'Twitter'

'It also allows you to keep track of what other people are doing as well, either by monitoring their Twitter updates online, or by receiving updates directly to your phone in the form of SMS text messages.'
'Panorama have started using this online service as another means to provide you with the latest information on the programme in a way that suits you.'
'Twitter allows us to send out simple alerts about upcoming shows, programme and website highlights, as well as last minute schedule changes.'

If you are not registered to twitter its a quick and easy process. When
going on the website http://twitter.com/ there is a large icon located on the page which is shown on the side of this page. When clicking on this button you go through a few steps to set up an account. This is a quick process and doesn't take long when you have made your account you can do a variety of different things such as following people you are interested in and see the news posts that they are making on a regularly bases.
When posting a 'tweet' on twitter it was provisionally made for tweeting by text, so you are limited to 140 characters on each tweet. This can be an advantage for many people as some people don't like to read lengthy message would rather see something get straight to the point, with this service this will allow that to happen. Another feature is shown in the top right of the page when on your account. This shows you your total amount  of people following and the amount of people you are following. This is a good gadget as you can track how many people you are being followed by and how many you follow this allows you to look at people you like when you want to rather than having to search for each person.
With all sites there are advantages and disadvantages of twitter. Twitter has a variety of different advantages such as:
  • Is easy to use, and can sign up easily and is only a short process and no confirmation email is needed so you don't need to worry about having an email account.
  • You can make as many accounts as you want, and everyone that follows you are known as your friends so you don't get peoples posts you don't know.
  • Twitter also has unique profile templates, which can be created through HTML mode or purchase it through legitimate dealers in different auction sites related to templates.
There are also a variety of disadvantages such as:
  • Is truly a social networking or social media, but there are many limitations. Twitter has no applications rather than other sites like Facebook and MySpace. This wont be a big problem for everyone though.
  • You can only upload one picture, which is your display picture and must be small, compare to other social networks which you can upload as many pictures as you want. This is a problem for a wide variety of people as you wont be able to share pictures of you and others, as it will take a longer period of time to do so.
  • You also cannot upload music files here on Twitter, but you can upload on the other social networks. This means you wont be able to share any new music you may have found.

Alot of celebrities have been caught on twitter 'tweeting' things they shouldn't and have been banned from games. For example Kevin Pietersen "was fined after leaking news he had been dropped from the England one-day team before it was confirmed."
